BMW Z1 K&N Filter

K&N on Z1

This is the K& N cone filter. It looks good, sounds good, but in this configuration probably does nothing at all for the performance. The problem is HOT AIR. When I open the throttle that little pink cone sucks like mad at all the air under the bonnet. Problem is, all that has come through the radiator and is HOT. So the engine breathes hot, less dense air with less oxygen than cold air. I will need to build some effective heat-shielding and ducting to get the best from it.

Ideally, I should place the filter in front of the front panel, there is a good space on top of the radiator ducting. I should then fix an inlet duct through the original bulkhead hole up to the air meter.

I used the K&N 57i filter kit for the E30 325i. The bracket to hold the air mass meter needs modifying, but it's not too dificult.
